Science and Writing

Science and Writing our integrated throughout our Mycology theme.  Students explain with detail the Life Cycle of a Mushroom.  Careful identification of mushrooms requires careful observation.  Nature Drawing captures the fine details of these specimens. Below is Rei's explanation of the Life Cycle of a mushroom.

The Life Cycle of  Mushroom
by Rei

You're about to hear the amazing story of the life cycle of a mushroom.  First, the spores fall out and flow with the wind through the air and drift down on a log or the ground.  After the spores, land underground, mycelium grows. Mycelium is like underground spider webs. Next, a round circular shape grows underground attached to the mycelium.  The round shape is called a button.  The button is the start of the mushroom.  The button has a veil.  A veil is the cover that keeps the mushroom safe.  As the mushroom grows the veil splits.  As the veil splits the mushroom gets bigger and bigger!  Then as the mushroom grows the veil slowly sinks down to the stem forming a ring.  The stem is like a finger and the left over of the veil is like a ring.  Finally, the mushroom has grown and the spores drift into the wind again.  The life cycle starts over again.
